Chinese flying car developer XPENG AEROHT confirmed on Tuesday that two of its electric vertical takeoff and landing(eVTOL)vehicles"made contact"following a rehearsal flight at an air show in Changchun,Northeast China's Jilin Province,with one of the aircraft catching fire upon landing.
The incident occurred in the afternoon following a flying demonstration by Guangdong XPENG AEROHT General Aviation at the Changchun Air Show,the company told the Global Times in a statement.
The company said that the two aircraft involved were practicing a formation flight when insufficient spacing led to a mid-air contact.One vehicle landed safely,while the other sustained fuselage damage and caught fire upon touchdown.
"All personnel at the scene are safe,and relevant departments have handled the situation in an orderly manner,"the company said in the statement,adding that the cause of the incident is still under investigation.
XPENG AEROHT is the largest flying car company in Asia and an integral part of the[Chinese electric vehicle carmaker]XPENG Motors ecosystem,according to the company's official website.The company has been expanding its global footprint in recent years.
Its"Land Aircraft Carrier"(X3-F)flying car was recently granted a special flight permit in the United Arab Emirates,officially launching manned flight tests across several locations in the country,a news release from the company's WeChat account said on September 10.
This marks the first time a Chinese flying car company has received a manned aircraft special flight permit overseas,underscoring a major milestone in the internationalization of China's low-altitude electric aviation technology,per the company.
