EDF Power Solutions has signed its inaugural corporate power purchase agreement(CPPA)for the 440MW Wei Lan Hai Changhua offshore wind project in Taiwan,as announced on Thursday. The 30-year agreement was finalized with Taiwan Smart Electricity&Energy(TSEE),a recently established government-backed entity focused on renewable energy procurement.
As the majority shareholder in the Wei Lan Hai Changhua project, awarded in 2022,EDF expects the facility to produce 1,700 GWh of electricity annually once operational. This CPPA marks a significant milestone for EDF’s Asia-Pacific portfolio and is the first such agreement for TSEE since its formation.
“Although large industrials currently dominate Taiwan’s renewable energy market, the agreement also demonstrates growing interest among small and medium-sized enterprises seeking access to offshore wind power,”an EDF spokesperson stated.
Taiwan’s demand for renewable energy is surging, driven by expansion in the semiconductor and artificial intelligence sectors, alongside a national goal to achieve 10.8 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.The Wei Lan Hai Changhua project supports these ambitions by contributing to the island’s energy independence and low-carbon transition.
“The project will contribute to Taiwan’s energy independence and support its low carbon transition,”the EDF spokesperson added.
The agreement reflects the increasing role of offshore wind in meeting Taiwan’s energy needs, particularly as industries seek sustainable power sources to support growth. The CPPA enables both large and smaller enterprises to access clean energy, fostering broader adoption of renewables across diverse sectors.
By securing this long-term agreement,EDF strengthens its position in Taiwan’s renewable energy market, aligning with national efforts to expand clean energy infrastructure. The project’s output will help meet rising electricity demands while reducing reliance on carbon-intensive sources.
This milestone highlights the collaborative efforts between EDF and TSEE to advance Taiwan’s renewable energy goals. The Wei Lan Hai Changhua project is poised to play a key role in the region’s energy landscape, supporting sustainable development and economic growth through reliable, clean power.
